As background, there is an explosive increase in demand for delivery of goods and services, complex communication and information, and real-time entertainment experiences. This demand is driving the need for greater access and connectivity to the world around us such that the ongoing evolution of commercialization will be driven by big data, business analytics and insights. Therefore, as an international (Canadian) award-winning enterprise, GREENLAND® understands there is significant opportunity for Canada to establish a leadership position via an ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) commercialization. This was seen in the vision for a globally competitive Ontario ‘Super Cluster’ ecosystem detailed in the Ontario Super Cluster Big Data Strategy report (Monitor Deloitte, 2014). As new technologies are introduced into the market, GREENLAND® and its business partners will keep pace through their own software development, client training, and dissemination of knowledge on how these systems relate to core business units.


GREENLAND® originally distributed watershed-related software by Environment Canada. We developed a popular hydrologic model (Visual OTTHYMO) still being used world-wide as a stormwater management and master drainage planning tool. Greenland has also developed a proprietary suite of decision support tools known as ISWMS


After fall-out from Canadian drinking water tragedies at the turn of the millennium, GREENLAND® focused its software efforts on source water protection needs. This included the development of an integrated water budget and nutrient loading model. The GIS-based program included an intuitive and stable interface whereby users are able to quickly create models from scratch. We also incorporated features such as customized output files, cross scenario plotting, importing routines and search tools. In November 2004, this project produced CANWETTM (v1.0), the "CANadian Watershed Evaluation Tool". Greenland further adapted the CANWETTM software code in 2005-06 for TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load), assimilative capacity and nutrient management projects and as part of a CANWETTM (Version 2.0) development program for the Province of Ontario. CANWETTM (Version 3.0) was completed in 2007 and with Canadian and U.S. Universities. Version 4.0 was released in 2012 and developed further each year.


In 2013, GREENLAND® and a renowned team affiliated with the University of Waterloo (Canada), initiated an information and communication technology development joint venture called “WatershedAtlas Systems”. The goal and strategy of this alliance is to utilize Canada-wide open government data resources; big data; web-based / mobile application tools; citizen crowd sourcing; social media marketing and other emerging technologies to engage and empower government market places to be more open, efficient and effective. In 2015, the first product by WatershedAtlas Systems was an Internet version of CANWETTM and now called “CANWET-5”. It is being used by GREENLAND® affiliates for high-profile cumulative effects and watershed management projects


In 2016, GREENLAND® formed a strategic Internet-of-Things alliance with renowned university research institutes from Sweden, France and Spain to initiate another IoT platform partnership. The joint venture goal is to develop a cloud-based flood forecasting, flood control and floodplain mapping system (called ‘FLOODVIEW’) for municipality managers and regulatory agencies. It will be used to identify real-time solutions that can minimize mixed rural/urban watershed flood damages and help prevent loss of life from flood disasters. This platform will also be developed for use anywhere else in the world and with an early warning flood forecasting tool; urban drainage system impact tool; Low Impact Development (LID) mitigation tool; and, powerful visualization tools connected to the latest georeferenced HEC-RAS floodplain mapping program. Development of the IoT system will also rely on proprietary GREENLAND® hydrology, storm water management and LID tools. This GREENLAND® (Canada-Europe) team is also consulting with property-casualty insurers in order to integrate an open/transparent system framework that can address climate impact concerns. Other Ontario-based partners include the County of Simcoe; University of Guelph; Communitech Corporation; First Nations; and, University of Waterloo Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change (IC3) and Partners for Action (P4A) network. Finally, the software engineering firm ‘Civil-GEO’ from the U.S., as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will also be participating on this landmark international partnership.


The workshop included lessons on industry standard hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software packages, as well as migration issues related to upgrading projects from older software to newer platforms. Case studies by GREENLAND® complimented the course material. The use of remote sensing technologies, as part of sub watershed and floodline mapping projects by GREENLAND® were also presented.

Muskoka Watershed Council

The Muskoka Watershed Council’s mission is to champion watershed health in those watersheds that flow into and through the District Municipality of Muskoka. There is no conservation authority in Muskoka, instead the Council is a volunteer-based organization supported by the District of Muskoka, local consulting firms, and local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change offices.

The Muskoka Watershed Council is currently undertaking a project to understand the potential impact of climate change in Muskoka to the year 2050. In working with our municipal partners, decision support tools such as Greenland’s new CANWET-5 model could be useful in informing our watershed management planning decisions in relation to policy development, stewardship priorities and education and communication programs.

On behalf of the City of Ottawa, we would like to thank Greenland International Consulting Limited, and in particular, Don Moss for his exemplary efforts in his role as Model Keeper for the City of Ottawa… Greenland has achieved a high level of confidence with Senior Staff and City Council as well Conservation authority and the Ontario Ministry of Environment… The City is appreciative of the new Modelling Tool developed by Greenland which will assist the City in conducting timely and efficient development reviews. The City will now be able to test proposed infrastructure with the overall development, determine changing impacts to existing infrastructure as ponds, as well as any changes to the receiving watercourses.

Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA)

Check out this (Greenland) video of THREATS (an open-source cumulative effects assessment tool to help direct environmental management (industrial or other)) and/or planning of future projects. It enables the compiling and juxtaposition of public environmental data (including, but not limited to, wildlife use areas and environmental quality data) with on-site or "targeted" environmental data. For security, the provision to include data protected behind a firewall exists to enable analysis and comparison of potentially sensitive data in the context of other datasets. The goal here is to allow for predictive capability and in turn mitigate potential effects. Equally, this provides a capacity to enable retroactive assessment (investigation of cause) of observed changes. The ability to spatially interpret stressor/pathway/receptor data, and conduct analyses within the tool, while retaining data in its original database (secure) is what is truly unique here. Excited to see what can be achieved with this powerful platform in areas where it has already begun to be used!
