  • At year’s end, WaterTAP introduced the GREENLAND® Group to a Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) team developing an Indigenous Youth Program at the Bolton Camp in Caledon, Ontario. GREENLAND® will provide financial assistance for a new internship program. Since 2016, Urban Watershed Group Limited (GREENLAND® Group affiliate) has served as the engineer-of-record for the Bolton Camp development design team led by LGA Architectural Partners. The attached project profile outlines work now completed by the GREENLAND® Group affiliate, Urban Watershed Group.
The idea for the Youth Program was developed by TRCA, Native Canadian Centre of Toronto, University of Toronto, and with support from Ryerson University. The Program will explore a participatory model for practice that includes the voices of Indigenous Youth and Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers (TKK) in planning and designing for green infrastructure. This initiative is motivated by the need to address a lack of Indigenous people in green infrastructure work; integrate Indigenous themes of respect, relationship, reciprocity, responsibility into planning and design; and, address a growing intergenerational gap on traditional environmental knowledge. The new 2018 summer internship program will connect Indigenous youth with Elders/TKK on the land while they learn new ideas and skills in an engaging way (with visiting mentors) and to encourage them to consider career opportunities in green infrastructure. A documentary filmmaker (preferable Indigenous) will be hired to teach the youth about film making and as a storytelling exercise about the experience. The youth and Elders/TKK will also be invited to drop in to participate in winter term graduate courses on green infrastructure being taught at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University, with visits to project sites to look for opportunities for green infrastructure, Indigenous place-making, and interpretive walking tours to celebrate natural and cultural history.

For many years, GREENLAND® has financially supported (and participated in) environmental stewardship and education partnerships with Canada’s First Nations and Métis Nations. This includes the BEAHR (ECO Canada) Aboriginal Training Program and curriculum programs offered by the Anishinabek Educational Institute.

Client Testimonials

Town of The Blue Mountains

On behalf of the Town of The Blue Mountains, we would like to thank you and your organization for your specialized technical support in a peer review capacity over the past four years… Your team not only provided timely review of all drainage related features of development applications but introduced updated municipal design criteria addressing changing climatic conditions. By unraveling the weather factors that impact snow melt potential, your team has helped the Town better understand how to be proactive in developing sustainable infrastructure.

Your team’s support assisted in keeping Town’s development projects moving forward efficiently. In addition to this, the review and introduction of updated municipal design criteria and construction standards addressing changing climatic conditions, continues to ensure the Town of The Blue Mountains fulfills its mandate for sustainable development.

Sustainable Buildings Canada

Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC) has worked closely with Greenland Consulting Engineers (Greenland) as part of the Savings By Design program offered by Enbridge Gas Distribution. The program features an integrated design workshop that exposes builders and developers to the potential environmental and energy performance benefits that can be achieved through a holistic planning process. This includes identifying alternative approaches to site sustainability including low impact development and storm water management.

Inherent in the integrated design process is the need to access experienced and highly qualified individuals and organizations that can identify potential alternative solutions. SBC has a very capable roster of consultants that represent the core expertise required for this kind of expertise. Greenland is one of those organizations, providing critical input related to storm water management, low impact development and site sustainability.

Greenland consulting staff are all extremely knowledgeable and up to date on the various issues related to storm water management and low impact development and have always provided that expertise in a professional manner, recognizing the need to be sensitive to both the needs of the developers and the desire to improve environmental performance. It has been a great pleasure to work with Greenland and we look forward to doing so in the future.
